ARIS 2026 Field Trip Day: Connecting Research with the Field

Following the technical sessions, the CARDI contingent headed out into the fields for an immersive, five-site field trip across Trinidad. This hands-on day allowed our regional scientists and specialists to move beyond the laboratory and engage directly with local farmers to observe innovative techniques in action.

Our field trip stops included:
Rio Claro: A visit to a commercial cassava field managed by farmer Peter King.
Tableland: Meeting with pineapple farmers Jagdeo and Darion Boodram, where the team sampled fresh pineapple straight from the field and discussed local production methods.
Princes Town: A stop at farmer Saleem Shah’s operation to examine a Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) hydroponic system used for lettuce and seasoning herbs.

Throughout the day, the CARDI team observed various agronomic techniques, took part in best-practice demonstrations, and fielded technical questions to the farmers, who shared valuable, practical insights and ready explanations on managing their systems.
