The Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) wishes to recruit on a contractual basis a suitably qualified and experienced consultant for a project funded by the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC) in respect of which CARDI is the designated project executing agency. The Protected Agriculture (PA) project is concerned with the increased production of vegetables and herbs through the use of Protected Agriculture in the Caribbean and operates in Haiti, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago (the Consultant will be required to carry out duties for a period of twenty days in each country).

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be under the technical supervision of the CARDI Country Representative and the National Coordinator of the CFC Projects in the particular country, as well as under the operational guidance of the Project Executing Agency at CARDI Regional Headquarters. The major responsibilities include:

1. Monitoring and evaluating the operational activities of existing local greenhouses
2. Liaising with site staff to correct any existing deficiencies
3. Transferring greenhouse technologies to stakeholders and project beneficiaries
4. Advising on infrastructure enhancement with regard to design and structural development
5. Conducting feasibility analysis for greenhouses with regard to location and other factors
6. Contributing to the development of a training curriculum in greenhouse technology
7. Supporting the expanded use of greenhouses through dissemination of information and provision of training to smallholders and producer groups

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

1. First Degree in Horticulture from a recognized university
2. Extensive knowledge and practical experience in the modern principles, practices and techniques as it pertains to Greenhouses
3. Must be computer literate
4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
