CARDI & IICA: Driving Climate-Smart Agricultural Innovation across the Caribbean

CARDI Executive Director Ansari Hosein recently presented the Report on the Strategic Partnership between CARDI and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) at the 46th Regular Meeting of the IICA Executive Committee in San José, Costa Rica (21–22 July 2026).

The report highlights joint achievements under the General Technical Cooperation Agreement (GTCA), delivering practical, climate-smart solutions to strengthen food and feed security across the region:

Root Crops: Yam gene bank development in Saint Lucia and sweet potato yield improvement trials in Barbados, St. Kitts & Nevis, and Trinidad & Tobago.
Alternative Feed & Forages: Sweet potato vine and corn silage production (Bahamas, Tobago, Guyana) alongside fodder bank and hydroponic feed system expansions (Antigua, Bahamas, Trinidad) to support livestock farmers.

Regional Seed Security: Corn and peanut seed multiplication efforts to strengthen disaster response and supply chain resilience.

Through targeted research, field demonstrations, and hands-on farmer training, CARDI and IICA continue to advance agricultural productivity and regional food sovereignty.
